With SQL Server 2008 R2, Microsoft is bringing “Self Service” Business Intelligence to a potentially huge audience of Office and SQL Server users. But what is “Self service” and how will it affect the roles of business users and IT professionals? In this session we explore the business cases, the technologies and the techniques of self-service BI in SQL Server 2008 R2. We’ll explore the background to these exciting technologies, and we’ll carefully cover the role of IT in securing, provisioning and sustaining the infrastructure required to bring the next generation of BI to the world of business.

The agenda for the day will be as follows:

SQLServer 2008 R2 Overview

Althoughtodays sessions most concern the radically new Project Gemini, there’s more to SQL Server 2008 R2 than that. In this session, Donald will give an overview of the full release, including the important improvements to Report Builder for BI users, policy-drive management for SQL Server DBAs, and the new Master Data Services application.

Introduction to Gemini

What is Microsoft Gemini? It's a new approach to Business Intelligence, featuring remarkably powerful analytics in Excel for end-users, and effective control and oversight for IT to manage the resulting "social network of network" of data and intelligence. In this session we'll introduce the broad concepts and technologies. This is the future of BI - don't miss it.

Expressionsand calculations in Gemini

In Gemini we introduce new expressions for the power user. These expressions have the analytic depth and range of multi-dimensional expressions, but feature the simple syntax of Excel. In this session you will learn the basics of these expressions and we'll introduce many examples of how to build calculated columns, and advanced aggregations.

The Gemini IT Experience

Gemini is not just about self-service for the end-user - the technology also features advanced managements and monitoring capabilities. The aim is to give IT insight and oversight to the operations and analyses being performed. This session will explore the Gemini server architecture in detail, and will cover important aspects of SharePoint and Excel Services integration.

Gemini Setup and Configuration

The moving parts of Gemini on the server include Excel, Excel Services, SQL Server Analysis Services and Sharepoint. However, the aim is to make Gemini easy to install and configure. How do we pull off that trick? This session will walk you through the various different flavours of setup and configuration needed to get started with a fully working Gemini environment.

Gemini Q&A

An “open mike” session with Donald Farmer. Ask anything you like about Gemini, and Microsoft’s BI Strategy … and be prepared for a lively discussion
