Who Moved My Tuple? Columnstore Indexes in SQL Server 2014
Data Warehouses often struggle with performance due to their large data volumes and large analytic queries, yet modern business demands real-time analytics against growing volumes of data. Columnstore indexes and batch mode query processing were introduced in SQL Server 2012 and were a performance game changer. However, the 2012 implementation of columnstore did not support direct updating and inserting of data, and other restrictions such as limited data types made the feature less valuable. SQL 2014 removes those limitations—you can use a columnstore as a clustered index (saving valuable disk space), and perform DML directly against the index. More query operators support batch mode, which means more queries will see performance benefits. You will understand the changes for 2014—updateable columnstores may cause changes to your ETL process design. You will see the power of columnstores in analytic queries, their challenges, and how to architect them into a DW design.
